The earrings that launched a collection of handbags...

For the longest time, I have been in love with 'Chand-Balis', iconic Indian chandelier earrings shaped and rightly so, named after the crescent moon. These earrings have been around for centuries. Originally having graced royal ears, their popularity has only grown over the ages to have reached the cult status they now command. Their uniqueness and versatility are things that I find truly fascinating! While they may all have been inspired by the very same crescent shaped moon, there exist countless iterations of these luxurious earrings, from shoulder grazing ones studded with gemstones to mid sized filigreed pieces. They've been made enamelled, beaten, repousse´d or just plain polished to perfection, each pair a masterpiece in its own right. And it is rather amazing how adaptable these are to all kinds of looks and styles. They can be worn with almost everything from tulle skirts to tweed jackets without ever once looking out of place. Their beauty and relevance have never seemed to wane over time and have, in fact, only grown manifold!

I had been looking around for the perfect pair for years, with no luck in finding exactly what I wanted. So, after giving up on what seemed like an eternal search, I had them custom made exactly to my liking. Drop shaped, crystal clear white sapphires custom cut with facets, set in 18k gold casing, overlaid with a fine twisted gold rope and finished with a row of lustrous freshwater pearl charms. The sheer watery brilliance of the faceted sapphires, coupled with the subtle iridescence of the pearls, was a match made in jewellery heaven. These have been my 'go to' earrings ever since and I have come to rely on them time and again to instantly add a touch of luxury and polish. It was this luxurious pair of bespoke handcrafted earrings that inspired our debut collection of handbags. If pearls and gold look so good together, they couldn't be limited to just jewellery! Thus was born 'Charmaine'...

A warm welcome home...

What is it about candles ....that instantly makes one feel relaxed and at ease ? It's amazing just how much the tiny little flickers of light can do to change one's mood, set the ambience and start a party ! I happen to have a weakness for candles. I cannot resist buying candles whenever I see them. From the floating ones to the scented and carved pieces, pillars, swirly sticks, votives, tea-lights, candles in tins or jars or just plain number and letter designs, I collect them all. But my fondness for candles can only be surpassed by my love for beautiful candle holders. Over the years, I have collected a large hoard of beautifully crafted candles holders in a range of styles and materials from paper (yes paper! I once found an origami lotus candle holder at a lovely craft market, which I used for a number of years with a battery operated tea-light) to wrought iron. Whether bought locally or from an exotic travel destination, every one of them occupies a special place in my heart and its own specific place in my home. Each one has a story to tell or a memory to reminisce over or simply a craft to be admired. However, if you were to ask me if there was a first among equals, it would be this set of figurines that welcomes me home every time I step in. They're a set of five beautifully sculpted sentries that line the mantle at the entrance of my home. Crafted from fibreglass resin cast in a specialised rubber mould based on a handmade sculpture, these little people are ever present, with or without lit candles, always at attention, waiting for me to return...
